This is an exciting time to study a region that is in a process of almost continuous change with several central European countries becoming members of the European Union. The regional focus of the degrees enables students to study specialist courses in the economics, politics, society and international relations of Russia, Ukraine and Central and South-Eastern Europe.

 

BA in Economics and Business with East European Studies
BA in Economics and Business with East European Studies with a Year Abroad

Students take compulsory introductory courses in economics and business studies, together with a choice of courses in politics and society, international relations, mathematics and statistics and a language of the region. The second year includes a core course focusing on the transition of the centrally planned economies of Central and Eastern Europe, and Russia, to a market-type system. This is supplemented by higher-level courses in economics and industrial organisation studies. The final year of the degree offers further courses in business and more specialised courses in the economics of the region with a special emphasis on the re-integration of the economies of the region into the global economy. Students may also take further courses in languages and politics in their second and final years.

Students who take the four-year degree, with study abroad, spend their third year undertaking courses and supervised study at a university in the region.

BA in Politics and East European Studies
BA in Politics and East European Studies with a Year Abroad

This degree combines training in politics, international relations and security issues with specialist courses studying the region which are of contemporary relevance in view of the proposed enlargement of NATO and the EU and the changing international situation.

In the first year students take a compulsory course in political theory and government. This is supplemented by options in economics, sociology, history, international relations and a language of the region. In the second year students are required to take two compulsory units in Russian Government and Politics and Government in Eastern Europe together with a choice of additional politics papers or options in economics or history. The final year of the degree provides courses in the application of politics and international relations to the region.

Students who take the four-year degree, with study abroad, spend their third year undertaking courses and supervised study at a university in the region.
