East European Languages and Culture: BA Degrees

The school offers an unparalleled range of undergraduate degrees in the languages and culture of the region. In addition to the popular and nationally and internationally renowned programmes in Czech, Polish, and Serbian/Croatian, we are the only department in the UK to offer comprehensive undergraduate single-honours degree programmes in Bulgarian, Finnish, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, and Ukrainian.

There are two main ways in which you can study our languages at BA level:

BA degrees in an East European language and East European Studies

These single-honours degrees provide a thorough grounding in the chosen language and culture, supplemented by a choice of optional culture, history and social science courses. At the end of this degree, you will have gained advanced skills in your chosen language and an expert knowledge of its literature and culture, combined with an in-depth understanding of the region of Central and Eastern Europe in all its variety and complexity.

BA degrees in an East European language as part of Modern Languages (UCAS R000)

As part of the popular UCL Modern Languages degree, you can also study an East European language in combination with another language. Half of your courses are taken in one language and half in the other, enabling useful and common combinations such as French and Romanian, Italian and Romanian, or Czech and German, but also other more unusual combinations such as Hungarian and Spanish, Polish and Swedish, or Bulgarian and Dutch. This joint-honours degree, where insights gained in the study of one language and culture complement those gained in the study of another, is a challenging but rewarding way to learn one of our languages.
