Working title of thesis: Putting Food on the Table in Romania: Between Agribusiness and Biodiversity

Present degree status: MPhil candidate (Part-Time)

Start date of research: September 2010

Supervisors: Dr Ger Duijzings (SSEES, first supervisor), Dr Michael Stewart (UCL Anthropology, second supervisor)

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: Romanian and Moldovan Studies Research Group

Description of research topic:
This research investigates the ramifications in Romania of two global phenomena: the restructuring of agriculture and reconceptualisations of nature as fragile and needing protection. These will be examined in a village setting by focusing on food production, circulation and consumption, including the social and cultural aspects of these activities. The research is anthropological and data will be collected through participant observation and interviews. My research questions are:
1: How are villagers' practices of food provisioning and access to related rural resources affected by (a) the modernisation of agriculture and (b) biodiversity conservation?
2: What changes occur in people's evaluations of rural resources and perceptions of risk and wider transformations?
