Working title of thesis: Performances, lives, memories - Romanian Folk Ensembles: Dancing into the 21st century

Present degree status: PhD candidate

Start date of research: September 2006

Supervisors: Dr Ger Duijzings and Professor Dennis Deletant

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: Romanian-Moldovan Research Group

Description of research topic:
My thesis looks at life in a Romanian folk ensemble in the 21st century with the focus on the dancers. My central theoretical concept is to look at performance on two levels, on stage and as part of daily life in the ensemble. I use a multidisciplinary theoretical perspective with the focus on anthropology but I also draw on works from sociology, dance ethnology, ethnomusicology and performance studies.
I am currently undertaking anthropological fieldwork with ensembles based in the city of Timișoara. This will later extend to consider members of other Romanian ensembles that form part of the same social networks.
