Title of thesis: The Prose of Sasha Sokolov: Reflections on/of the Real

Date PhD awarded: January 2011

Supervisors: Dr Maria Rubins, Dr Seth Graham

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: Centre of Russian Studies

Description of research topic:
My study of Sokolov's prose is an exploration of a representation of reality that faded away into its reflection, where, paradoxically, it found its essence and substance. In Sokolov's artistic reflection, reality is not expressed by language but embodied by it. The self-reflexivity inherent in Sokolov's texts illuminates the fact that art does not innocently reflect or convey reality. Rather it engenders, or signifies it. In short, it makes it real.

Current research:
I am currently working on transforming my thesis into a published monograph.
