Working title of thesis: Highly skilled mobility and the transfer of knowledge in Serbia

Present degree status: PhD candidate

Start date of research: October 2007

Supervisors: Professor Slavo Radošević and Dr Eric Gordy

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: Centre for South-East European Studies

Description of research topic:
My research concerns knowledge transfer through the international mobility of highly skilled individuals from Serbia. It asks what knowledge and skills people acquire and generate when they spend time abroad. Knowledge transfer can comprise formal skills and qualifications, but tacit skills are equally important. A key question is why knowledge gains do not automatically follow repatriation. The project intends to generate a better conceptualisation of return migrants' micro-level integration into the host and home countries to identify - in terms of what is acquired and transferred - the types of knowledge and skills that lead to both tacit and tangible welfare improvements.
