Present degree status: PhD candidate

Start date of research: September 2007

Supervisors: Dr Seán Hanley and Professor Dennis Deletant

Centres to which the thesis is affiliated: Centre for European Politics, Security and Integration; Centre for South-East European Studies; Romanian-Moldovan Research Group

Description of research topic:
My thesis focuses on a series of unexpected effects of the post-1990 public policies for the protection of national minorities in Romania, brought together under the journalistic tag of 'ethno-business'. The term (initially coined in relation to similar phenomena occurring in Hungary) refers to practices seeking to take unfair advantage of the existing legal framework for the protection of national minorities in order to obtain material, financial or political gain.
