Working title of thesis: The Role of Anti-Semitism in the Ideology of the Legion of the Archangel Michael (1927-1938)

Present degree status: PhD candidate

Start date of research: September 2007

Supervisors: Dr Rebecca Haynes (primary supervisor), Dr Egbert Klautke (secondary supervisor)

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: Romanian-Moldovan Research Group

Description of research topic:
My primary research question seeks to analyse the interaction between the anti-Semitism professed by the legionary movement - the most popular extreme right formation in inter-war Romania - and its fascist character. The hypothesis to be tested is that the legionary social project was defined by their representation of the 'Jew', a locus of displacement of the real problems facing Romanian society, and at the same time a rationalisation of its desired state. This research is backed up by the use of a methodology indebted mostly to psychoanalytic theory and its adaptations to the understanding of social phenomena by discourse theory.
