Working title of thesis: The influence of teachers and peers on the choice of acculturation strategies and ethnic identification - a study of adolescents in Russian-language schools in Riga

Present degree status: PhD candidate

Start date of research: October 2007

Supervisors: Dr Richard Mole, Dr Allan Sikk

Centre to which the thesis is affiliated: CEELBAS

Description of research topic:
The main aim of the study is to look at how adolescents construct and reconstruct their ethnic identities and choose acculturation strategies at school and how their teachers and peers influence these processes. The study aims to look at how the boundaries of ethnic identities are compromised, redefined or maintained in a context of multiple and intertwined worldviews that are present in Russian-language schools in Riga Latvia and how these processes affect identity formation. I also analyse how the use of two languages within the educational context influences the degree of ethnic identification and choice of acculturation strategies.
