MRes in East European Studies
The Master of Research (MRes) in East European Studies is a 2-year programme of area specific, language oriented, advanced research training in the methodologies and approaches of economics, politics, history, culture and literature. Graduates of the programme will possess the attributes to complete a PhD within three years or to enter the labour market directly with advanced analytical and research skills, regional expertise and proficiency in a language of the area.
The MRes forms part of the Centre for East European Language Based Area Studies (CEELBAS). The provision of postgraduate studentships associated with CEELBAS is currently under review.
Entry Requirements
At least an Upper Second Honours degree or equivalent. For papers in certain course options, appropriate background knowledge in the relevant subject is expected and there are special language requirements for certain papers.
Non-native English speakers must provide evidence of English proficiency - 'good' level in accordance with UCL English language requirements.
Curriculum
Students on the MRes must take 330 credits during the two years, comprising of 80 language credits, 50 Methods of Area Studies Research (MASR), 40 advanced research methods training, 80 specialist electives and a free-standing dissertation worth 80 credits. In addition, all MRes students are obliged to participate in a zero-weighted Research Skills course and to attend a weekly Research Centre Seminar.
Year 1
*Students register for whichever course they are taking on an unassessed basis out of 'Cultural and Historical Methods' and 'Introduction to Quantitative Approaches' under the rubric, 'Interdisciplinary Approaches' (0 credits).
