Marta Jenkala

Senior Teaching Fellow in Ukrainian


Marta Jenkala Marta Jenkala teaches Ukrainian at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as translation studies and an introductory course in Ukrainian culture. She has published language learning materials, articles and reviews, and is an experienced translator and editor. She is author of Read Ukrainian!, an online course designed to support the acquisition of reading skills in Ukrainian, and is currently preparing a course in communicative Ukrainian for fieldwork and research.

Marta also teaches Ukrainian at the Slavonic Department, University of Cambridge. She has extensive experience of examining, as Chief Examiner for the GCSE examination in Ukrainian (1989-97) and, currently, for a number of governmental, educational and professional institutions.

She has been associated with Ukrainian studies at SEEES for many years, as a student, external examiner and, since 1999, as teacher of Ukrainian. While studying at UCL for a BA Honours Degree in French and Linguistics she attended classes in Ukrainian language and literature given at SSEES by the late Victor Swoboda. She subsequently gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and an MA in Second Language Learning and Teaching from the University of London. Prior to her current position at SSEES Marta gained extensive experience of mainstream language teaching at secondary level, and was Head of Modern Languages in her previous two posts.

Born in the UK of Ukrainian parents, Marta spoke Ukrainian as her first language. Outside the mainstream academic sphere, she has taught Ukrainian at the London Ukrainian Community Saturday School, the London College of the Ukrainian Catholic University (now the Ukrainian Institute) and the Polish University in Exile in London. From 2004-2010 she held the honorary post of Director of the Ukrainian Institute (affiliated to the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine).
