I joined SSEES in 2002 after a short spell teaching IR and security at Manchester University, where I also completed my PhD in international relations with a thesis on alliance theory. Since 2005 I've been coordinating the Centre for European Politics, Security and Integration at SSEES.
Research Interests
'Contexts of security' is probably the theme that captures best the mix of theoretical and empirical issues that drive my current research. I draw on hermeneutics and narrative theory to study the mutually constitutive relationship between concepts and politics of security in different historical or regional settings. My work on securitization, alliances, and regions converges towards this contextual framework of analysis, which I try to develop in a forthcoming book. Although in a slightly different way, my research on contemporary security issues addresses a similar theme. I am especially interested in the continuous interaction between the discourses of identity and strategic necessity that have marked post-Cold War European security. This topic brings together my work on NATO, regional security integration in the Black Sea region, and contemporary Romanian foreign and security policy. It is also the subject of a book-length study currently in progress.
Teaching and supervision
I teach several courses on international relations and security:
I'm also contributing to Theory and Practice of Social Research (MA) and Advanced Qualitative Methods (MA).
Research supervision
I welcome PhD proposals that take a theoretical perspective on contemporary issues in international politics and security.
