UCL SSEES: Lone Working

SSEES staff and research students are permitted to be in the SSEES building at certain times outside of the main business hours, when the normal arrangements for managing Health and Safety are not available - e.g. there are fewer or none of the appointed First Aid persons, or Fire Marshals present in the building. For this reason it is essential that anyone working outside of the periods when the building is on open access should be fully familiar with the emergency evacuation procedures and observe SSEES arrangements for managing Lone Working.

These arrangements for Lone Working must be read in conjunction with the Security Arrangements (http://www.ssees.ucl.ac.uk/securityarrangements.htm) which provide full details of who is authorised to be in the SSEES building during what periods. Anyone found in the building outside of the authorised periods will face disciplinary action unless they have obtained specific permission from the SSEES Director.

Periods when the Lone Working arrangements apply:

Term-time Monday - Friday 07:00 - 08:30 and 21:00 - 23:00

Saturday 08:00 - 10:00 and 17:00 - 20:00

Sunday 08:00 - 20:00
Outside Term-time Monday - Friday 07:00 - 08:30 and 19:00 - 23:00

Saturday - Sunday 08:00 - 20:00

Signing in book

In the event of a fire or other emergency, it is essential that the attending officer (e.g. Fire Brigade) be able to quickly establish who is present in the building. For this reason, anyone present in the periods of Lone Working, as specified above, is required to sign the designated book which is located on the Reception Desk at the front of the SSEES building.

Notifying others of your presence

If you are the first to sign the book, you are asked to ring Security on Ext. 37321 to inform them that the building is occupied. Similarly, if you are the last to sign out, you should ring security to inform them that the last person is leaving the SSEES building.

If you are not the first to arrive, it is strongly recommended that you make contact with one or more of the other members of staff present in the building and make them aware of your presence. If you are second-to-last to leave, you should call the remaining person to let them know that they will be alone in the building.

Do not allow entry to the building to unauthorised persons.

Emergency situations

It is doubly important for Lone Workers to familiarise themselves with the exit routes to be used in the event of fire. Fire notices providing this information are prominently displayed throughout the SSEES building. In the event of the Fire Alarm Sounding, leave immediately via the designated fire escape routes.

In the event of ill-health, accident or other incident (e.g. detection of an intruder) the following action should be taken:

  • Phone 222
  • State location and telephone number
  • Give details of Accident

In the absence of SSEES First Aid personnel, assistance should be obtained from

  • UCL Hospital Accident & Emergency Department, Grafton Way, London WC1E 6AU Tel: 0207 388 7215 (A&E Direct Line)

In the event of a maintenance emergency the following actions should be taken:

  • Phone 30000
  • State location and nature of the emergency
  • Follow-up by submitting a report to the SSEES Services and Supplies Officer (s.cole@ssees.ucl.ac.uk)
