Lindsey Hughes (4 May 1949 - 26 April 2007)

Lindsey Hughes It is with great sadness that we mourn the death on 26 April 2007 of Lindsey Hughes. Lindsey had battled with cancer for more than a year. She joined SSEES in 1987, became Reader in 1992 and in 1997 was made Professor of Russian History. She will be honoured as a scholar of Russian history and culture, and her work will be drawn on, for as long as one can imagine. She was working almost to the last - handling Slavonic Review matters as editor in early April - and a few weeks before she died she was able to complete the manuscript of her latest book, a history of the Romanov dynasty. All this is eloquent testimony to the person we all knew, her courage, consideration, dedication. But above all we would like to pay tribute to Lindsey's gift of friendship, her generosity of human spirit, that made the lives of all those who came into contact with her richer, brighter, warmer. We remember her courage in leading the singing, as she had for so many years and still using the same sheet of carols, last December at the SSEES Christmas party. Our deepest sympathy is with Jim, with whom Lindsey shared her life. Lindsey had, and will always have, not just our admiration but our love. The UCL flag flew at half-mast in her memory and in her honour. All the staff and students of SSEES, and so many others in UCL, other universities and across the world, will profoundly feel the loss of Lindsey as scholar, teacher and friend.
