3. Enrolment Procedure for new Non-Beginners

To ensure that new students are placed in the most appropriate class, you will need to be assessed prior to enrolment. This includes new students wishing to join Beginners Courses in the Winter Term (i.e. from Lesson 11) or the Summer Term (i.e. from Lesson 21).

  • 3.1. Assessments

Unless you are a complete beginner enrolling for the first part of Beginners Language Course, we will need to assess you prior to enrolment.

Assessment is a quick and informal process, that we aim to make easy for everyone.

During the assessment process, you will also have an opportunity to speak with your prospective teacher, and put to them any particular questions you may have about the course.

The first thing we ask you to do is complete a very simple assessment form in which we ask you to tell us (in English) about your language studies to date, and to write a brief paragraph in the language you are applying to study.

This form is submitted to your prospective teacher, who will then telephone you towards the end of the enrolment period to ask you to tell him/her a bit more about yourself and your language studies. After they have spoken to you, you will be contacted by the Evening Courses Office with details of the class the teacher has advised you to join.

  • 3.2. Assessments for Intermediate and Advanced Russian Students

Please note that students applying for places on Lower Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced Russian courses also need to complete a brief multiple choice placement test. The tests are self-scored (i.e. The answers are at the end.)

Students who are trying to decide between applying for Lower and Upper Intermediate Russian courses should take the Intermediate Russian Placement Test.
Students who are trying to decide between applying for the Upper Intermediate and the Advanced Russian courses should take the Advanced Russian Placement Test.

After you have done the test, calculate your score, and write it on the bottom of your assessment form.

  • The first term (Autumn) starts in October (Lessons 1-10), the second term (Winter) starts in January (Lessons 11-20), and the third term (Summer) starts in April (Lessons 21-30).
