Evening Courses
Established in 1915, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) is one of the world's leading specialist institutions, and the largest national centre in the UK for the study of Central, Eastern and South-East Europe and Russia.
We at SSEES are proud to offer an unparalleled range of evening courses in Central and East European Languages - some of which are not available for part-time study anywhere else in the UK.
Whatever your reason for learning a language, it will be an excellent investment in your future.
Knowledge of languages makes travelling abroad easier and more pleasurable. It allows you to gain more insight into the places you visit, and the people you meet there.
Learning a language will also improve your job prospects: according to a recent CBI survey, UK firms highly value staff who can communicate in a foreign language and who show an understanding of different cultures.
As the UK strengthens its cultural, economic and political ties with its Central and East European neighbours, knowledge of the languages and cultures of this region is gaining vital importance.
We currently offer evening courses in the following languages at Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Levels:
For all other languages, please contact the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education.
Our Courses
Our courses equip students to communicate with confidence in their chosen language of study. All four skills are taught - reading, writing, listening and speaking - with particular emphasis being placed on oral communication. Our courses present the language as it is spoken today in everyday situations, covering basic survival skills for beginners through to fluent discussions on contemporary issues for our more advanced students.
Materials used in class include course books, newspapers, and audio and visual resources. Small class sizes allow the maximum involvement of all participants. For more information, see the Course Information page.
Our Teachers
All of our teachers are either native speakers, or they have native fluency in the languages they teach. Many of them teach on BA and MA courses here at UCL and at other universities. Our teachers, who are highly qualified and extremely popular with their students, create a friendly, stimulating environment for language learning.
UCL SSEES Library
As one of our evening course students, you are automatically entitled to use our internationally renowned Library, where you can access the resources you need to further your language studies in your own time.
In our library, you will find dictionaries, newspapers, cultural magazines, language learning materials and a Multi-Media Room, with an extensive collection of films, documentaries and regularly updated news recordings in a wide range of languages.
(SSEES Library term-time opening hours are 09.00 - 21.00 on weekdays and 10.00 - 17.00 on Saturdays)
