Centre for the Study of Central Europe
Director: Dr Richard Butterwick
SSEES is the major centre for Central European studies in the UK. Almost two dozen full or part-time members of staff - including language and literature specialists, historians and social scientists - teach and research at the School. The Centre for the Study of Central Europe seeks to promote research and teaching on the history, languages, literature, political culture, music, arts and society of those lands once part of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as on German-speaking Europe and the Baltic. These countries (in their present borders) include Austria, Belarus, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. The Centre's approach to the region is multi-disciplinary, comprising history, languages and literature, culture, politics and social sciences. The Centre acts as a focus for scholars and researchers of the region in pursuit of joint or individual research and provides the principal forum for graduate and doctoral studies; postgraduate students are regular contributors to its seminar programme. At the same time, the Centre aims to foster a deeper understanding of the region amongst the wider community.
