CEELBAS scholarship
The Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS) is supported by a major award (£5.6M) provided jointly by HEFCE, AHRC, ESRC. The Centre is a consortium comprising the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (the lead institution), Russian and East European Studies (REES) at the University of Oxford and the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the European Research Institute, University of Birmingham. The Centre is also working closely with a network of partners at the Universities of Bath, Cambridge, Kent, Manchester, Sheffield, Warwick and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. The Centre aims to integrate the scholarly capacities of these universities in order to deliver a sustainable flow of highly trained area experts.
The Centre is able to offer full scholarships (total of 38 Masters and 33 PhD/DPhil) subject to standard ESRC eligibility rules.
Who can apply for a CEELBAS scholarship?
Candidates must have the minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree and must be able to fulfil the ESRC's academic and residential requirements (in particular, see Sections 2.28-2.43 of the ESRC eligibility rules).
If the candidate has taken other qualifications at postgraduate level, or has professional qualifications, they may still apply for a CEELBAS studentship. However, if they were in receipt of any prior public funding for postgraduate qualifications, this may be taken into consideration in determining the length of funding they are eligible to receive.
Candidates who are (or expect to be) in receipt of a scholarship or grant from another source while studying for the MRes will need to provide full details on their application form. Where the income from such grants is clearly inadequate or not in excess of an ESRC award, students may still be eligible for a CEELBAS studentship.
What does a CEELBAS scholarship provide?
The CEELBAS scholarships are awarded for the two years of study on the MRes programme and the value is announced by the ESRC each year. Scholarships consist of two parts:
- Payment of approved institutional fees direct to UCL
- Payment of a maintenance grant to the student (if eligible, see ESRC eligibility rules sections 2.36-2.43)
The basic annual rate of the maintenance grants in 2007-08 for students following a course in London is £14,300 per year.
How do I apply?
In the first instance, applicants need only complete the standard form for UCL Application for Admission as a Graduate Student, making sure they have followed general guidance provided for MRes applicants. In the funding section of the form (boxed 20-21), indicate that you intend to apply for a CEELBAS scholarship. To be eligible your application (including two completed Reference Forms) must arrive in the Registry before the published deadline for the CEELBAS scholarships.
